- Governance and Compliance
The University Centre has invited a variety of guest speakers to speak to our students to give a real-world insight into the developing financial services landscape in Jersey.
It was a pleasure to welcome AFEXs Offshore’s Sales Director, Aaron Bird, in to provide an insight into AFEX and their strategic move to Jersey as their preferred choice of international finance centre. This coupled perfectly with a presentation given a week earlier by Jersey Finance’s Business Development Director, Allan Wood. Both of these guest speakers have contributed valuable industry knowledge to our cohort as we near the end of our studies.
Allan spoke about Jersey Finance’s crucial role in propelling the message around the world about the favourable corporate environment Jersey has to offer, whereas Aaron was able to explain the commercial rationale as to why AFEX, being one of the fastest-growing independent commercial global payment and risk management providers in the world, chose Jersey for its offshore hub. AFEX is actively embracing fintech; therefore, Aaron expressed how Jersey’s developing technology sector, and IT infrastructure, have been of great benefit to the company. Furthermore, AFEX being at the forefront of a constantly changing economy, Aaron explained how Jersey is well-placed to face the coming challenges. He detailed how Jersey offers AFEX greater levels of security when compared to other international finance centres and how the work of organisations, such as Jersey Finance, are giving firms greater confidence in the island position as a leading international finance centre.
Having high-calibre, industry professionals give talks on their fields of expertise is of significant value to our learning. It allows for us to understand how the classroom-based theory is applied in industry. Jersey International Business School gives students this opportunity, which many universities don’t. Bringing guest speakers in enables connections between the local business community and future graduates looking to pursue successful careers in finance. This has a significant positive impact on the development of young, talented individuals on the island.
