Euan Spencer is in his second year of the BSc (Hons) International Financial Services degree. He attended the talk delivered by guest lecturer Maria Gardner, Senior Investment Analyst at Asset Risk Consultants (ARC).
We were very grateful to have Maria Gardner, Senior Investment Analyst at Asset Risk Consultants (ARC), join us along with former student Ben Channing, now an Assistant Investment Analyst at ARC, as guest speakers for a talk on "Measuring the Success of a Portfolio". This combination of a professional working in the industry and a former student who had sat on our side of the table just a year earlier meant that we could see the next step into the financial services industry through the perspective of someone whose situation was very similar to ours not so long ago.
In her talk, Maria covered the various metrics used to measure the success of portfolios as well as ARC's role in collating and analysing the data of Investment Managers through the medium of a mock Investment Audit. By exploring the investments of a private client with the objective of adding value to said client, Maria showed us the utility that ARC provides in terms of analysing the performance of investment managers and highlighting which ones are suitable for individual clients. Maria also spoke about the role of benchmarks in analysing a portfolio, and about how a more reliable measure of the success of a wealth manager is not how they outperform against the arbitrary benchmark, but how they perform relative to their peers.
It is immeasurably profitable for us to hear from industry professionals as it allows us to translate the theories that we learn in the classroom into the working environment and, due to the practical nature of the degree, helps bridge the gap between theorists and industry leaders. This is why we appreciate Maria and Ben so much for coming in and spending the time to reinforce our knowledge of portfolio analysis and teaching us about ARC’s role in the portfolio management sector.
