An insight into the Capita Asset Services
Undergraduate Employment Programme

Jared Brown

Name: Jared Brown

Degree: BSc (Hons) International Financial Services

Year: First year

UGEP placement: Trainee Administrator at Capita Asset Services

"In 10 years' time I see myself on a yacht in the Bahamas"

Why do you feel it important to combine your studies with an industry placement?

For me, it is important to be able to link my studies with a placement in industry, because it not only enables me to find an area of work I enjoy, but also allows me to gain a full understanding of a Financial Services business in Jersey. From only being at Capita for 6 months, I can already see there are so many areas of a business that you do not truly know about until you are part of their team! The UGEP will help complement my studies and enables me to gain a practical insight to my studies over the 2 years.

What are you most looking forward to about your placement?

I’m most looking forward to gaining an insight to all areas of a Financial Services business. To gain a thorough understanding to see how each department contributes to the company’s overall goal and how they are interlinked. I’m also looking forward to meeting a range of new people, making new friends and being part of a variety of different teams.

Name 3 skills, professional or personal, that you hope to develop:

  • Teamwork
  • Confidence
  • Awareness of a business structure

How have you enjoyed the degree so far?

So far the degree has been really enjoyable. It is great meeting new people from the degree and from the workplace. The topics learnt in the degree have been interesting and varied I have even started to be able to see how what I am learning in the classroom can be linked and applied in the workplace.

How did Jared shine in the interview process and how will his role progress over the next two years?

Jared’s application demonstrated curiosity and knowledge of the finance industry. It was apparent that he had put thought into the application and interview process; he carried out research on Capita and also on the financial industry in Jersey. During the interview, Jared was very enthusiastic, engaging and clear in his desire to succeed with the Undergraduate Employment Programme Placement (“UGEP”) and to gain his BSc (Hons) International Financial Services degree at the Jersey International Business School.

What makes Capita a great place to complete an undergraduate work placement?

The JIBS International Financial Services degree programme covers many subjects, for example Compliance, Finance and Company Secretarial. As part of the UGEP we will be able to support Jared by allowing him to move between departments to diversify and gain broader experience. We have matched the modules learnt in the classroom to our different teams and we believe this will be highly valuable to Jared to transfer his classroom knowledge into his new working life. Capita also supports Jared through a buddy programme during each of the different rotations and by providing a manager throughout the UGEP, to ensure a strong relationship is formed. Capita is an excellent Company where there is an open and honest culture throughout the whole business, where each of the teams work together as one; we have an open developing organisation, providing a structured learning programme for all of our 200 employees.
