Students from the Jersey International Business School (JIBS) recently attended a presentation by Barclays’ Mark Cleary CFA, on Equities and Equity Markets as part of their International Financial Services degree course.
Mr Cleary, who works in GI&S Trusts at Barclays in Jersey, was asked to present to the first year students to complement their current modules, which include ‘fundamentals of banking’ and ‘financial instruments’.
The presentation covered the basics of equity instruments, global equity markets, modern portfolio theory, systemic risk and the concept of market and stock specific beta. Mr Cleary also discussed some basic valuation models for equity instruments with the students.
The BSc (Hons) International Financial Services two-year fast-track degree is awarded by the University of Buckingham. The degree is designed and taught by academics and leading practitioners with a significant focus on employability.
Gavin Fraser, Degree Academic Director, said:
“Our goal is to give JIBS’s students a thorough insight into the business side of the finance industry from a recognised specialist in the field. All of the students thoroughly enjoyed Mark’s presentation, provided extremely positive feedback and as a result clearly appreciated the benefit of what JIBS’s association with local industry professionals can offer.
“There is no doubt that the additional practical application afforded by Mark provides significant benefits to all of our students and JIBS would like to thank Barclays for making this session possible.”
Mr Cleary was pleased to be asked to deliver the lecture to the students at JIBS.
“These students are part of the future of the finance industry in Jersey and they no doubt benefit in their studies from the interaction of academia and industry. It was also thoroughly enjoyable to interact with the students and to see first-hand their enthusiasm for finance and financial services in general.”
