On a path to success and career progression

Joseph Peacock is graduating this October, having chosen to come over to Jersey two years ago to study the BSc (Hons) International Financial Services degree. He explains in this blog his reasons for choosing the degree and how he has already reaped the benefits of that decision.

The main reason I choose to study in Jersey was the island’s status as one of the world’s leading International Financial Centres, with financial services at the core of the island, so I thought what better place to study.

I moved to the island with no Financial Services knowledge or experience. At first I felt overwhelmed with the idea of completing 24 exams and assignments within a two-year period. However, this was managed by the timetable and student welfare the business school offers students.

The exposure to finance professionals and finance industry lecturers that Jersey International Business School provides is abundant. I have absorbed so much in terms of my personal development but also up-to-date financial knowledge. I now read the ‘business’ and ‘financial markets’ section in newspapers, whereas before I used to just read the sport.

The degree allowed me to work for a financial services company two days a week. This gave me exposure to finance, which enhanced my CV for experience – crucial to appeal to employers. It was not just the experience and knowledge I gained from working while studying for the degree that benefited me, but it also provided me with an income stream.

The variety of modules is brilliant, as it covers in depth the variety of industries within financial services, from Accountancy to Portfolio Management to Corporate Governance. This has helped me determine where my strengths are and what career to pursue.

I feel I have developed so much more as a person and my knowledge of the financial services industry has increased.

I am now part of the Elian Graduate Scheme 2016, which has put me on a path to success and career progression. Without Jersey International Business School this opportunity would not be available to me.
