15 students graduate with degree in International Financial Services

15 students of Jersey International Business School have graduated from the University of Buckingham, donning caps and gowns at a graduation ceremony on Friday 30 October at the Parish Church of St Helier.

The ceremony was officiated by Dr Frances Robinson, the Head of Collaborations at the University of Buckingham.

The students completed the fast-track degree in International Financial Services, which was designed specifically for the international financial services industry, by studying four 9-week terms over 2 years, covering the academic content of a standard three-year degree in that time.

Prior to graduation, over 85% of the students had already been offered permanent roles with organisations including Appleby, RBS International, Sanne, Ashburton, UBS and Elian. Two students are currently interviewing and one has decided to spend some time travelling following the two intense years of study.

JIBS is delighted that four students were able to gain a First Class Honours award in this degree. Eight students achieved 2:1 classification and three students 2:2.

At the graduation ceremony, Trystan Colley was presented the Jersey International Business School Prize for Excellence, awarded for the best performance overall. The Prize for Outstanding Achievement, awarded for most improved performance, went to Jodie Hassett. Following the awards, students received graduation gifts kindly sponsored by RBS International.

The syllabus of the degree, which is not a traditional finance degree but was designed in collaboration with the international financial services industry, provides students with a broad and comprehensive understanding of financial services with modules covering Quantitative Methods, Marketing, Portfolio Management, Risk Management and Globalisation in Financial Services.

Throughout the course of their studies, students benefited from guest lectures delivered by industry experts such as Michael Clarke (Executive Director at UBS Wealth Management), who provided students with a detailed overview of private banking in the Channel Islands, Nick Mangan from RBC Wealth Management who contributed his experience to the Portfolio Management module and Linda Nicol (Managing Director at STM Fiduciaire), who spoke about the role of trusts in wealth management. Special lectures such as these give the students a thorough insight into the business side of the finance industry from recognised specialists in the field. Students also attended the Business School’s Compliance & Economic Crime Symposium in November 2014 with keynote speaker Polly Greenberg, Chief of Major Economic Crimes Bureau at the New York County District Attorney’s Office, which investigates and prosecutes all manner of white-collar fraud, including accounting fraud, securities and commodities fraud, large-scale mortgage and insurance fraud and Ponzi schemes

Alongside the academic study of the degree runs the Undergraduate Employment Programme, which takes place two days a week for the duration of the degree. This programme has been instrumental in providing relevant experience to students who secured the paid work placements. The programme is now supported by over 20 partners including Barclays, Moore Stephens, HSBC, Dominion and Alex Picot, meaning there are more opportunities for students enrolling onto the degree next year. All of the Class of 2015 undertook a UGEP placement, and five graduates have accepted permanent graduate roles with their UGEP partner.

The school is delighted to now have 24 alumni and anticipates successful careers for them in financial services or in any other field they choose to pursue. 22 new students have recently joined this year’s intake, the largest group yet of students, and applications are now being accepted for October 2016.
